* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with �bayefal�, after first collaborating with nervous horizon�s wallwork on his �facts / fyah� 12� at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban�s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * �bayefal�, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. �for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally�, kolé explains, �and without his hard work i wouldn�t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.� a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, �bayefal� also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, �malumz� � backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban�s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz � is another track rooted in personal experience. �malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family�, kolé explains. �they call me malumz, which in zulu means �uncle�. the first time citizen boy called me �malumz�, it was overwhelming � i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.� * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé�s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip �malumz� with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

figure 86 finds the label�s headmaster revisiting a dormant classic from 2005, delivering two extended excursions that pick up on the lunatic vibe instilled by the original while each mix provides for a uniquely new experience. sitting on the record�s a-side is the hardspace mix, a sparse and bone dry rhythmic affair, built around the originals characteristic cut-up vocal sample. a hammering thump carries along the track relentlessly, the air of oppression created only amplified by a heavy assault of clangig claps. the digital bundle comes with an even more stripped-back hardspace tool version, making it an excellent surprise to throw in and out of mixes. on the flip faki takes opportunity to show us one of his lesser known sides, taking time to gently develop this deepspace mix into a meandering meditative journey. trading in the vocal for a spaced-out synth opens the track up for the shifting tribal drums to truly work their magic and makes this piece of music feel equally mysterious as it sways with cosmic energy.

after multiple cassette and 12� releases through kastil�s stale in 2016, it�s time for irazu�s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. �shtamm� is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. �refused to be found� is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through �shtamm�. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. �last hours� is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of �shtamm�. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. �torso� is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

this june session victim return to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album.listen to your heartis the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco�s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lpsee you when you get there. here we present the first of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew. bring it back gets things rolling with session victim�s trademark live drum breaks, looped up pads and hooky vocal samples. only good vibes here, with uplifting keys bringing a warm and soulful edge whilst shimmering juno notes add a floaty element to get lost in. next up we have if we can make it here, the title being something of an in-joke with the boys when they find themselves in the more remote or far-flung corners of the world performing their music to an appreciating crowd. the track is based around a simple yet beautiful 4-bar chord progression repeating throughout and shows svm in a playful and jazzy mood, managing to include soloing flute and marching snare drum rhythms without as much of a flinch!moons and flowers is up next, another sublime slice of hazy house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. echoing rhodes licks join dubby synth fx, adding waves of colour whilst the gentle vocal provides the icing on the space-cake. lastly we have the hatch, which winds things down somewhat for a lovely, somewhat stoned interlude track which is over all too soon. an impeccable demonstration of retro-inspired yet forward thinking house,listen to your heartsees session victim at the top of their game.

legendary dj daniele baldelli, who was resident at the infamous cosmic club on lake garda and pioneer of the cosmic sound, joins forces with italian maestro dj rocca and takes file under disco on a journey into outer disco space. famous as an extremely eclectic and open-minded dj, here baldelli transports this approach to the production of funkynoizer . and in the hands of a master producer like rocca the result is a track which fuses dub, afro, disco and electronic elements seamlessly into a tasty alternative discoid brew. remix action comes from brasilian duo selvagem (big fans of baldelli) whose reputation grows and grows with every spin of each record and every release that passes through their talented hands. here they dress the original in leopard skin pants and throw into into an all night, outdoor carnival party where anything goes. next up pete herbert & dicky trisco take the original on a heads down disco trip and work it to the bone. live driving bass, funky clav and a glorious piano line do a wonky waltz with the the afro dub essentials of the original. finally the man himself dj rocca treats us to a very classy disco-boogie version that would have rocked legendary parties back in the halcyon days of nyc disco

next up on accidental jnr are 2 club ready tracks from sydney producer cassius select that straddle genres somewhere between techno, bassline and hardcore. 90 is a gurgling brutal post-dubstep wobble fest at a house tempo whilst herd offers up select�s trademark idiosyncratic vocal snippets wrapped up in most broken and shuffled of techno rhythm . cassius select lives in the undefined sonic boroughs of the hardcore continuum. his first ep explored the grittier end of techno under australian label hunter gatherer followed by a 12- of unstable rhythm workouts under dj haus� uttu label. the toronto native is hell bent on inciting movement in the most unorthodox ways. sonics crush genre-defining sounds into a pastiche of cryptic one liners and side eyes. drums that invoke an impossible sense of swing and momentum. most importantly select�s sound defines itself on the mission to deconstruct the world around him,to level out the playing field so everyone can have a bite. this year, select joins with uk imprint accidental jr. to release a two-track fury of sound that snarls with every grimace.

ever reliable canadian producer fred everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the lazy days label. on the a-side he s taking to crazy p s -like a fool- a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original s warm, disco-infused elements. on the flip, he takes on roach motel s -the night- and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. by way of variety the final track sees fred create a laid back balearic, auto-tuned version of franky selector s -wind swept dune-.

following lone aka matt cutlers stunning sixth album levitates hallucinogenic joyride through breakbeats, he returns to r&s with ambivert tools the first in a series of eps for the floor returning to hypnotic 4/4 excursions. inspired in no small part by the rich seam of house that he�s been excavating with his fine magicwire imprint, a refreshed cutler delivers an ep stacked with sure-fire bullets, crafted for his intoxicating dj sets. first up is crush mood - crunching drums, lush resampled chords and dulcet female vox combine into a heady, peak-time rush. chroma comes off like a lost 90s anthem, with its shimmering vibes, airy chords and bumpy rhythm track. b-side closer from a past life could well be the strongest track on the ep - hazy emulator ii chords, spiral arpeggios, gooey bass and woozy african percussion that finds lone digging deeper into some of his more esoteric house music influences. ambivert tools finds cutler a true master, at the top of his game - taking all hes learned over his many years of beat exploration and condensing it down into rugged house stacked full of nagging melody / harmony that elegantly pays tribute to bygone years whilst simultaneously feeling fresh and vital to 21st century dance floors.

exchange place is the dj collective that includes nicuri himself alongside joey anderson, dj qu and a producer by the name of art gallery. the name makes reference to a district in downtown jersey city, just across the river from manhattan, which is where the crew is primarily based. they released a 12-inch under the name exchange place with dj qu s strength music label back in 2010, and have dj d occasionally as a group around new york city. the new ep, immaculate inception, includes one track from each of the four contributors.
